Watercolor Sketchbook Review: Daler Rowney Cachet Aquafine & Langton Prestige PLUS Quick Rose Demo

I also reviewd the Langton Prestige watercolor paper ATCs and Robert Simmons White sable brush that came with the sketchbook. I will also show you how to paint a quick rose on both papers so you can compare.

Aquafine paper:
Pros: Affordable, thick, bright white paper
Cons: "tire track" texture, does not take scrubbing well, 100% cellulose

The Langton Prestige:
Cons: None

Bottom line on the paper: For pen and ink/wash or quick sketches the aquafine is fine but I personally would pick the Langton Prestige, the pads are about the same price but you get half as many sheets with the Langton. You can always save it for the projects you want to spend more time on. I like it as much as Arches and more than Fabriano Artistico.

I am so happy that they offered the ATC papers with the sketchbook because I found out about a new paper I like. I hope you find it helpful!

Robert Simmons "White sable" brush
Pros: price, synthetic, good paint, nice snap
Cons, does not hold a ton of water.
Bottom Line, a good value!

This is NOT sponsored, I purchased this with my own money and am linking to Jerry's Artarama because that is where I bought it and they have the best price but you can shop where you choose:)

Thank you so much. It really does help to see this side by side comparison. The difference in the flow of the color is very apparent. I just purchased a pack of Bee Paper which is cotton as well. I've used it before, but I was using it for making prints for a friend and selling her lovely ATC prints on Ebay for her. It definitely made a difference in the printing process over a cheaper brand of water color paper. So now it's going to be interesting to see how it compares with actual water color.

Couple months ago I bought a Langton Prestige pad. I wasn't expecting much, but I was really happy with the results. It was bright, tough stuff, so I ordered a lot of sheets from Jerry's when the overstock price went into effect. Score!

I really like Indanthrone Blue, too. Mine is the Winsor & Newton version which is a single pigment. I prefer it to Indigo because the W&N Indigo is a 3 pigment mix & has black in it. It mixes beautifully!

the Aquafine at £9 for a jumbo 40 pack is a good practice or new watercolourist good paper and the langton is a better sized product and at the A3 kind of size for a 12 sheets is any thing from £10-£15.

thank for the review.

Happy New Year! Great comparison! I didn't realize paper could make the paint look duller. I just thought the way the water was absorbed is different! I always learn so much from your videos! :) I'd love to see a review on the Lukas paints.

So glad you endorse the Langton Prestige! Their blocks are about $10-15 cheaper than Arches at Jerry's (comparing same size to size) and Rich has told me it's worth trying, but so glad this can handle water-intensive techniques like Arches can. Not to say this will replace Arches for me as it's in a class of its own, but it's good to know I can have another 100% cotton paper/block to use even more freely.

I love using the Langton hot-press. Although to be fair I haven't tried too many watercolour papers since I'm fairly new to watercolour. Just out of curiosity and I know it's a personal preference for each person but what do you like working on the most? Hot-press or cold-press? And what brand of watercolour paper do you like using the most? Maybe I could give it a try. I'm always keen to try out new things! :)
