Few things. In the Old (digital) US Army field manual it says your Dakota fire pit air hole should be facing the wind if remember correctly. So if the wind is coming from the North you would have the smaller air hole north side of the larger fire pit.

I see you push the knife down on the flint to get sparks. I use to also but its easier to aim and control if you hold the knife firm and pull the flint back. The knife doesn't move just aims the sparks.

You tickled me with this. At the beginning you say second hole is for exhaust but near the end you say you can feel air being sucked into the fire through that hole. I just had to laugh at that...thanks man...I needed a laugh.
