Start OIL painting miniatures for just $5. Painting Miniatures with oil paints for cheap. This video will try to help you or influence you to start or try miniature painting with oil paints for cheap. No I am not giving you cheap student grade ( cheap ) oil paints sets you get at bookstores or oil washes that are just thinned down oil paints branded as "hobby grade " oil washes or those water soluble oil paints that I had for 15 years now. I am talking about real oil paints, fine arts oil paint tubes not named Winson & Newton.

I hope after watching this video, you will get a handful of oil paint tubes at your local art supply store or at the very least cancel your interest of purchasing " hobby grade " oil washes. #miniaturepainting #paintingwarhammer

From what I understand the cheap paint thinner from the hardware store has a strong scent. While it goes above the $5 point of the video, people may have a better first experience with Gamsol, or Speedball Mona Lisa mineral spirits. Good quick first video though on what is needed to set up for a different medium.

Oil paints are a solid method though a completely different monster than acrylic.

I got me a relatively cheap set of W&N oil paints last year and need to be better about messing with them. I need to take the plunge and try doing more than oil washes with them!

Oil washes are a fantastic entry into oil paints, and frankly, even if you generally prefer acrylics, they're still a great tool on their own. They've almost completely replaced acrylic washes in my toolkit. I mostly use more colorful acrylic washes for light staining, and oil washes for when I really want to dial up the contrast in the shadows, or add a hint of a color in the recesses.

Can you mix the oil paint into the normal acrylic paint? Like what is done with inks.

Thanks for this! Why did you stop using the water mixable oils? I just started using them (W&N Artisan); is the difference that big compared to traditional oil paints?

I can't believe they sell paint thinner in a pop bottle.
They even put a colorful label that looks like soda pop.

The only trouble (in my home) is the smell of white spirit / thinner.... :)

I see a partial overlap with the use of inks. Now I have to ask. How would you compare ink wash and glaze with oil wash and glaze? When would you prefer one or the other?

Did not expect to see tubes of Ladoga and Sonet so far from their home xD (also W&N has a lot of brand fame, as paints they are pretty meh)
