I hear nothing on cwu and cwl. I only hear cw signals when in ssb mode.

Most ham radios come default on different bands on which mode cw will be. LSB voice on 3.800MHz is standard. The cw stuff comes default to upper side. Of course you can manually change it like you showed on that beautiful rig! So there is a standard way that most people are operating. But you are free to change it up.
