For anyone wondering, the man playing the guitar is Mark Bernes.

What is so remarkable about this film is that it was made DURING the war. It wasn't in made in hindsight to honor the effort and sacrifice made, but to recognize those things as they were happening without promise that they'd actually bear fruit in the form of victory over the Nazis.

My father tells me that during the war when the song was played in the streets, people would stop and cry. men and women

In the west you'd see WW2 veterans here and there playing acting roles, but in Soviet Russia every single man and most women had a part in the war and you'd be damned if you could find someone in cinema who wasn't, so you had some really authentic ww2 movies, even if they did have a patriotic spin to the plot.

I met a lovely old Russian Jewish man in the park the other day, , and he told me that his father, back in Moscow, used to line him and his two brothers up and sing with them the most beautiful harmonies ... He sang this song to me, and taught me what it was about ..but i only remembered the melody... Thank God google has that song voice search thing, or else this gem would be lost in my mind. He has a lovely voice, and a brilliant mind, and I can't wait to see him again

Edit: i sit with him in the park for almost an hour every week and we talk and chat and we are friends now :))))

Those eyes- they look like they have seen so much. My heart breaks knowing how many suffered in the war

Hello all, I'm starting this channel to make people across the globe familiar with old russian songs, which are still so popular among Russians and are being sang by common people here. I will make more videos always placing english subtitles. Hope everyone will like the songs and the voices of our past generations.

Dark is the night,
only bullets are whistling around
With the wind singing songs in the wires
and the stars softly gleaming
You are awake
though the night has long covered the grounds As you’re rocking the cradle, I know
you are quietly weeping

Oh, how l want
to see that tender look in your eyes
Oh how I want
just one moment to kiss them gen-tly!
We’re miles apart.
And although stars are lit in the sky
Yet the dark steppe between us tonight
feels so troubled and empty

I do believe
you’ll remain ever faithful and true
It’s this faith that gave courage to me
in the fiercest of battles

And I’m at peace
cause I know I’m returning to you
And whatever befalls me, for sure,
I’ll return in fine fitness
I fear no death.
It’s been taking its toll all around
And even now
it is raging and will not settle
You are awake though the night has long covered the grounds As you’re rocking the cradle I know I’ll return in fine fitness

I'm learning Russian and found this. The song is captivating. I love how literal the Russian language can be and still maintain a sing-songy sound. It's remarkable.

Only the arrogant and foolish would dare deny or dismiss the courage, resilience and sacrifice of the Russian people in the second world war. This song has always touched a place in my soul I can't explain. To see these men, and know what they gave for their country, and ultimately the Allied cause...
