What Is The Coldest Continent In The World? | Facts For Kids | Geography Facts | Fun Facts For Kids
The coldest continent in the world is Antarctica. Located at the very bottom of the Earth, Antarctica is a place of extremes. It's not only the coldest, but also the windiest and driest continent.
The temperature there can drop incredibly low, especially in the winter. The lowest temperature ever recorded on Earth was minus 89.2 degrees Celsius, which was at a Russian research station in Antarctica.
Because it's so cold, Antarctica is covered in ice all year round. In fact, about 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice that's 1.9 kilometres thick on average. It's so icy and cold that very few plants or animals can survive there, but you will find lots of penguins, seals, and different types of birds.
Even though it's a tough place to live and visit, scientists from all over the world go to Antarctica to do research because the ice there can tell us a lot about Earth's climate history. It's a very cool (and very cold) place!
