Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition Review

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition reviewed by George Yang on Nintendo Switch.

Xenoblade Chronicles X was already one of the Wii U’s best games, and this Definitive Edition has escaped the destruction of its old home like the White Whale and settled down nicely on Switch. The quality-of-life improvements here are enough to justify another trip to Mira alone for veteran players, and it’s the perfect opportunity for newcomers to explore its beautiful landscapes for themselves. Its combat systems are deep and engaging, and the massive open world never got old to run, jump or fly across. Its main story may not quite live up to the standards of the series, but a likable cast of characters and plenty of compelling side missions mean Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is still an adventure worth writing back home about.

You may have noticed this is the second time we uploaded our review of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition! We pulled down the first one after we learned that some of the gameplay had framerate issues stemming from how it was recorded, NOT the performance of the game itself. We always want to show you how a game actually runs in our reviews, including if they are laggy or slow - but in this case, some clips were not an accurate reflection of what this game is like in action, so we replaced those parts and reuploaded a new version of the review. Sorry for both the error and the delay! - Tom M

It's crazy how Xenoblade went from a game Nintendo of America wanted nothing to do with on the Wii, to the series having 2 remasters and 2 new entries on the Switch

No mention of the soundtrack? That's one of the highlights of the game.

Monolith Soft are the undisputed kings of openworld optimization.

I still can't believe this actually exists. It's one of the first few games that I wanted for them to (re)release on switch ever since the console came out in 2017.

Good to know that the framerate issues were (mostly) due to an error in the way the footage was recorded and not the game itself, as most people noticed. Hopefully this doesn't happen again though, a lot of people might have gotten the wrong idea on how this game runs and might avoid it entirely due to that. Let's hope that is not the case

Now I have the whole series on one console. Going to replay them all on switch 2

Never played this, graphics looks amazing for a Switch game. Kinda surprised they didn't re-release this on the Switch years ago.

Xenoblade was the reason I bought a Wii, a Wii U, and switch. It’s a system seller franchise. Glad people can finally play this game on the switch

The premise of leaving Earth to live on another planet resonates deeply with me nowadays

Game Freak should just hire or ask for Monolith Soft’s help for their next Pokemon game.

Nintendo should Really look into sequels to Pandora's Tower and The Last Story, or revamped remakes. Each would be modest hits
