I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for.

“Working less” almost never works out unless you own your own firm, or work in the unskilled service sector.

Ehh... hearing about people worrying about being able to retire with "only $3m" is a great way to feel poor.

I was advised to diversify my portfolio among several assets such as stocks and bonds since this can protect my portfolio for retirement. I'm seeking to invest $200K across markets but don't know where to start.

Interesting ideas. I have no idea how they only have a $10-20k per year travel budget when they spend $180k per year on expenses. Maybe they can downsize to only have 1 expensive vehicle and 1 cheaper vehicle, I doubt it would really be noticed. There are many many ways of reducing outgoings whilst maintaining the same quality of life.

Go Go, Slow Go, No Go I imagine would seriously affect the outcome here. I can't imagine what an 80 year old is going to spend $15k a month on with a paid off mortgage. Long term health care if needed = sell the Million Dollar house.

1 spouse retire now, another works part time for the until 100% debt free and I bet all works out fine.

This sounds like a great problem to have.

Your $3 mil can easily grow to $4 mil, and in a heart beat fall to $2 mil

Move to Europe and you are all set. Universal healthcare + low or zero real estate taxes + lower cost of living. The 15k/month magically becomes 5K per month for the same lifestyle (that is an outrageous amount of money for average Europeans). Also Travel is much cheaper. No reason to live in the US once retired

More and more people might face a tough time in retirement. Low-paying jobs, inflation, and high rents make it hard to save. Now, middle-class Americans find it tough to own a home too, leaving them without a place to retire.

Unless you are buying / Financing real estate, artwork or traveling sleeper class to Europe every month 15K seems a bit too much.

They could retire in France. US pensions/capital gains/rental income is not taxed by France (only by the US, due to a tax treaty) and you will live like a king on 8, 000 a month if your house is paid for.

the 3 million also includes 100K in a 529 which if used in education probably doesn't get taken into account for their 15K/ month expenditure. so more like a 6.2% withdrawal rate that is quite high. though with social security you can ease up on it.

There's no way I could retire with $3m. Maybe $5m.
