As a descendant of the Yaluk-ut Weelam clan of the Boon Wurrung people, I warmly welcome you to this inaugural conference Activism @ the Margins, being held on our traditional country.

The history of the Melbourne area and of the Yaluk-ut clan is complex and cannot be told in isolation. Our history was never a written history. Instead, it has been passed down from one generation to the next through our strong oral traditions, which remain with us today. While there is no doubt the impact of Europeans upon our people and their traditional way of life was devastating, we also believe that the history of Melbourne is unique because of the ways in which we, and our ancestors as members of the Boon Wurrung people, consistently demonstrated our capacity to analyse and respond to the ongoing and pervasive colonial presence.

As our children grow up in this great Country, it is my hope that we can all celebrate our shared sense of history. This is a history which makes our country so unique. To honour this, has an even greater sense of urgency, as we face an unprecedented environmental crisis with fires ravaging not only parts of my own traditional country, but that of many other Indigenous nations across this land. These fires are impacting all Australians. It is incumbent upon us, as we share this nation to understand the importance of maintaining and practising Cultural knowledge, and appreciating that our living culture is part of the natural and the built environment, and is intrinsic to the continuation of our relationships with our ecology, our landscape and with each other.

I therefore again offer my heartfelt welcome to all attending this conference.
I also welcome our speakers, and our strong Cultural leaders, who will share with us their insights and knowledge about climate change, the impact to eco- systems, the environment and humanity, and what these may mean for our shared future living in Australia.
