Protest rocks PoK: Angry locals on streets over inflation; violence erupts as police use force

A violent clash broke out between the police and people from the Dadyal area of Pakistan-Occupied (PoK) Kashmir on Thursday which left several injured. The protesters gathered to protest against skyrocketing inflation and load shedding. Pakistan police subsequently implemented curfew in the region, prohibiting all activities. Before this escalation, the protesters had warned the Pakistani authorities against resorting to violence. Meanwhile, speaking to ANI, political activist Amjad Ayub Mirza condemned the incident, emphasizing that violence against peaceful protesters in PoK is intolerable. He also reported the tragic death of a schoolgirl in Dadyal. Mirza further stated, "Riots have erupted in Dadyal, with hundreds of protesters taking to the streets in Tatapani. The state's violence against my people is a ploy to impose Section 144 and a curfew in PoJK ahead of the May 11 long march and sit-in outside the legislative assembly in Muzaffarabad."

Pakistan (leadershi and Army) are again making the same blunder -- the same blunder -- in Kashmir (Azad/Pok) as they did in 1971 with East Pakistan. I recall I fasted for the well being of the then East Pakistan's population in 1971. I was teaching at Cambridge at the time. Now that I'm retired and have watched the systematic exploitation and mistreatment meted out to the general population in Azad (PoK) Kashmir, I'm praying for the safety, well being and prosperity of all our Kashmiri brothers, sisters, children -- and pensioners. Their lives have become intolerable and without hope. Kashmiris are a peace-loving, law abiding and tolerant people -- but they have been pushed too, too far by a defund Pakistani adminstration (political leadership & Army). This level of suffering by a population is not natural, not tolerable. This cannot go on. All the Kashmiris (in PoK/Azad Kashmir) are asking for are the basic rights and facilities -- and for normal, peaceful lives that are affordable and that give them hope and the younger generations hope. Not too much to ask. .
