This is a guide on how you should build out your collection when you start a Magic the Gathering: Arena profile. It is not as complicated as it seems when you open up the client for the first time. This is meant to be as comprehensive as possible when it comes to your first year in the arena. Moving forward, there are other mechanics that should be implemented, but start here and see where and how to start.

Enjoy!

Wholehearted agreement on every step - especially the transition to buying packs. A lot of people are (IMO) still focusing a little too much on draft value and haven't yet adjusted to how much value gold packs provide. (For every 5000 spent on a draft, you are giving up 3-4 steps of wildcard progress and half of a gold pack - when it was just the wildcards, I could see the argument to some extent, but now I would say the balance is weighted towards pack opening.)

Draft still has value, but I'd say that the gems are probably the most important part of that value (enjoyment, learning etc aside, obviously) - in my view the mastery pass is always worth getting, even ignoring the cosmetics - just the sheer number of packs, mythic ICRs etc is by far the most efficient option in terms of gem cost (provided, of course, you can be certain of completing or near-completing the pass, which is why I always buy it at the end of the season - had to do an emergency draft run a week or two back to get this season's pass).

For starting out a collection Jump In is great, I wish it had been around during Ixalan when I started (or, more relevantly, that I'd known about it during Crimson Vow when I came back), but the value definitely tails off as your collection fills out. I would also recommend, to anyone with the time, actually playing out some of the Jump In games - they can be a lot of fun. The 'playing field' is pretty level, no one's collection size matters and there are no meta decks to face; if you're willing to be a bit patient and enjoy trying to find ways to take advantage of the synergies between the cards, it can be quite rewarding. It's also a bit like playing draft, but without the pressure of choosing the cards and building the deck (which some people might not like so much, I guess, I dunno, I pretty much build a new deck most days right now, so what would I know...) - so it could maybe serve as a very early stage for someone to get a little more used to how decks handle differently in a limited environment before trying actual drafts. Not sure there's a ton of value in that (what with the actual drafting being the real skill), but it might at least make someone feel a little more confident in the gameplay side of it...

as a player who sucked in playing draft, buying packs is the best way to build the card collection lol

Just starting out. Starter Event decks and rewards has been good to me. Didn't know about flipping the 500 for 750, with some luck. Starter Even duels good for xp and gold. I tried to play ranked and just destroyed me so many times.

Thank you for this video. I have been searching for so long how to build my economy as a new player. Even if the video is a year old I still appreciate this. Question would you change anything since the video is a year old?

Hello @CoffeeStout, thank you for this guide! I really liked it.
I have one question though: is it an option to skip the drafts and just buy packs? Is it worth?
I know draft is converted into gems for the season pass, but from last experiences, I'm not good at it.

I’m still a little overwhelmed. Can anyone recommend a BLUF for a new player who wants to create new decks ASAP?

I don't have the jump in event. Do I first have to do all the basic stuff like the color challenges?

Is 'Phyrexia: All Will Be One' Mastery Pass worthy?

I loved the video, thank you very much for all your help, me and my friends started playing MTGA today and you guided us a lot! A couple quick questions though, is the Jump In thing a limited time event? And what do you mean by saying that if you wait to open Golden Packs until after rotation you'll get a much tighter pool of cards to pull from? I thought a rotation meant a new set comes in, meaning you have all the rares and mythics from there in the pool now too, no? And also, does any pack you open progress towards unlocking a Golden Pack or only the newest one (or standard legal ones) affect that?

Again, thank you so much, keep it up and take care!(:

What is the 3, 400 coins for?!!?!!?
I got djabaited.

I don’t see how to improve quickly with Quick Draft often times even on the first pull of the pack the highest rarity I’m offered is an uncommon. I’m lucky if one of the 3 packs has a mythic or a rare.

Do you get gold pack progress when you buy the newest pack, or any standard legal pack?

Way better use of gold is just buy packs rather than join draft. The best players with stacked decks are playing draft too. You'll get stomped.
