I believe we often confuse the term "short field landing" with "spot landing." With a spot landing we are attempting to do nothing more than hit a particular point on the runway. A short field landing by definition we are trying to land using all available runway (hitting a spot) and clear a obstacle. Which could be our reason for the shortened field.

In this video we go over 3 of our best short field landing tips:
1. Manage Your Airspeed (airspeed is king)
2. Aim Ahead of Your Point
3. Aerodynamic Braking

Jason, I have to say as a person that recently passed a checkride. I have watch every single video you have multiple times. I studied a good bit but watching you go through it and explain every detail in motion is how I learned to fly. I’m on my way to Kissimmee to get instr. and commercial, hopefully I’ll make my way over to your base. Thanks for all you have done!

Hey Jason, Im currently a PPL student in Canada, and were taught to do short field landings with Full Flaps. In the scenario where I fly a C172 that would be 30 degrees. Does the US teach something different? I also believe that short field in the POH of a 172P states that it's with full flaps. Maybe youre model states something different? Could you clear this up for me?

Great video. Also, I just finished your Flying Again video. I found the video to be inspiring, well produced, and entertaining. I caught the bug over month ago (rusty pilot here) but I'm in the middle of a move to Durango, CO from TX and that has slowed me down a little. I've already found an instructor in CO (and NM). No flight time yet. I hope to be back in the air within a few weeks. I'm not sure how long it'll take to regain proficiency but I know that it'll be fun. 22 years is a long time but I've been diligently studying, taking some video training (Sporty's, I hadn't found your site when I started there), and generally studying airspace and maneuvers. I remember a lot more than I thought I would. I was about 38 hours into my instrument training when I quite flying. I've also been doing an instrument ground school course. Videos like this are extremely helpful

60 mph (53 knots indicated) on short final we used on that 40 degree Cessnas 172. Little flare allowed. Same on the 40 deg flaps C150, 60 mph on final. 70 is way too high speed with only 1-2 passengers on board. Wimpy short field landings were not allowed in the 1970's i learned to do them.. On a 1, 800 long runway.. With 30 feet trees at each end. Old Crosby field.

Nice panel setup. Which C172 model is that ?

is it okay to have an aiming point when executing a short field approach and landing? isn't the aiming point and touchdown point be the same points? I am just confused about this one landing only.

I have a question: why do you hold the control wheel from the middle like that? Is that a method of reducing over-controlling?

I thought the idea of a 50ft obstacle is that it’s closer to the end of the runway than 1/4 mile away. You seem to be just doing a normal landing. You’re not mentioning horizontal or vertical speed on final. How is anyone supposed to tell what’s different about this “short field” landing as opposed to your normal one?

A short field landing without full flaps is not a short field landing. Who taught this guy?
