It literally means "Snow-woman." In Japanese folklore, she can take on the appearance of a tall, beautiful and very pale woman dressed in all white. One of her hobbies seems to be freezing unlucky travelers to death.

Some people think this is one of Kikuo's innocent works, but once you know what a Yukionna is, you realize it's not--- the Yukionna is a folklore thing and supposedly she freezes travellers to death...So yeah.

If I may add my ten cents, here's my interpretation of the story:
A boy and a girl are out in a blizzard.
The girl succumbs to the cold faster than the boy, and the boy tries to keep her warm by wrapping her in his coat.
The blizzard gets stronger and the boy eventually freezes.
Then they become the moon and the stars! They play happily together in space until...
The boy is briefly revived (Can't hear, can't feel, can't move, but someone is trying to warm him up in a pocket/coat)
The girl is too far gone, so she remains in the sky as the moon.
The boy is still able to see, and wants to be with his friend the moon again, so he simply "falls asleep."
And then they play together again until the moon grows tired.
Her light fades away as she finally leaves for the afterlife, and the boy follows too, disappearing into the night sky.
The End!

i think that the kids went ice skating and the ice was thin, so the girl fell in. the boy jumped in to try to save her but couldn't swim, and also didn't expect the water to be cold, hence the yukionna thing?

the way i interpret this, it tells the story of two children who were abducted together and left to die in the cold. they relied on each other as companions and created this story with eachother as coping mechanism. once one of them died, the other felt hopeless and went into a state of shock/paralysis and eventually died as a result.

Ohh ok i just realized that it switches perspectives of the other friend in the pocket so jt was actually the little blonde girl who was freezing to death first and her other friend was trying to take her home and in doing so froze with her

So the story is 2 kids were playing in the snow together. The boy passed out so the girl tried to carry him. But she collapsed and they both died
