Turkey-Syria earthquake: Why was it so severe?

Thousands of people have been killed and many more injured after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake and several aftershocks caused widespread destruction in Turkey and Syria.

The earthquake is one of the most powerful Turkey has ever experienced.

But there are several factors that meant it was particularly devastating.
