The idea that breast milk somehow loses its benefits after a year is a myth that is still believed by many. I've even had several people share that their doctor told them they shouldn't continue breastfeeding after a year, which seems absolutely crazy to me with all of the evidence there is! There is a big difference in supporting patients who want to be done at 12 months and telling them to stop. There are also a few places where they only recommend 12 months because it's the cultural norm and not because there is evidence that breastfeeding is no longer beneficial.

Many thanks to @thebreastfeedingmentor for her recent post on breastfeeding past 12mo.

Breast milk past a year shows an increased amount of protein and fat. It also continues to provide beneficial bacteria for their gut health including staphylococci, streptococci, bifidobacterial, and lactobacilli.

Aside from breast milk continuing to provide beneficial nutrients, it can also be a source of comfort and it can help reduce pain and discomfort.

Something that often surprises people is that around 15-18 months, many young ones want to nurse every few hours again. It's completely normal and they naturally subside again. Each child is different, but child-led weaning typically ends around 2-4 years. Some cultures even continue nursing up to about 7 years.

On top of benefits for the child, breastfeeding also plays a role in reducing risk of breast cancer,

Have you ever had a medical professional tell you that nursing beyond 12mo is no longer beneficial? Or maybe family and friends?
