Jeff Stein touched on a point that I've suspected for a long time: Our politicians love sanctions because its a way of looking like they're doing something without actually having to do much or risk anything. I remember seeing multiple analysts predict that the sanctions on Russia were not going to go as planned and wondering how all these people in Washington couldn't see it, too. The only obvious answer is that the institutional and political pressure to "do something" was prioritized over the need for carefully considered strategic policy.
