Fun fact" Shawarma comes from the Turkish word Cevirme (Tjevirme). Which means to turn. Doner means to turn/spin.. gyros is the Greek translation of Turkish Doner .. and also means to turn/spin.

All of them come from Doner, which in turn comes from horizontal spinning cevirme that some brilliant chef in the 18th century (In Bursa I believe) decided to turn vertical so the fats of the meat would drip over the meat instead of off it, increasing the flavor
