If this is the rule, the ump shouldn’t be pointing at him and yelling his name before he gets to 1st. Seems like umpire interference.

Bellinger's expression. 🤣 I think that dude barely knows what's happening on his best day. No chance here.

Craig Counsell licking his lips had no business being that funny 😂

This rule is very old like me. What is not well known is the home plate ump yelling at him as he's headed to first. THAT is the only thing bizarre here.

Baseball is Judge Judy's court with occasional running

*What I get from this play:* You don't need to throw the ball to walk someone, but you do need to touch the base before a pinch runner can take your place; however, if a rule is broken, you must appeal it or else it is ignored. 🤔

It seems MLB has spent my entire life creating an activity in which, through hard work and perseverance, with dedication and talent, one can avoid playing any sport at all.

The first base coach goofed up big on this one. That’s on of his jobs is to make sure runners touch the base.

How is there no blame on the home plate umpire? He's pointing at Sanchez and waiving him to come back and switch with the pinch runner.

One of my favorite aware manager moves was years ago Bruce Bochy got a Dodgers starting pitcher removed from a game because their manager, after a mound visit, on his way back to the dugout took his last foot off the mound for about a fifth of a second, then put it back down and said like 2 words to the pitcher. Bochy instantly was on the umpire that that constituted 2 mound visits in a single inning and the pitcher had to be removed.

Is this for all walks? Say someone got a nasty hit by pitch and had to be replaced by a pinch runner and was carried out. Will the guy have to touch 1st even if he was injured?

Talking to the arbiter of the rules: so, you're saying you know the rule? Only in baseball 🤣

The rule book clearly says "The batter becomes a runner and is entitled to first base without liability to be put out (provided he advances to and touches first base) when:"

But if the ump calls him back and confuses him then the ump should be able to make the ruling of "I fucked up, and this is what's rational to have happened in the interests of fair baseball" and allow the runner to go tag first since time had been called already?

MLB rule 9.14(c) states, "If a batter awarded a base on balls is called out for refusing to advance to first base, the Official Scorer shall not credit the base on balls and shall charge a time at bat."
So I imagine Sanchez is the one who is out, and it would be scored as an out and an AB for him, since I believe the out falls under this rule. I could be wrong, I'm not an expert, but that's my interpretation of the rule as written.

I knew this breakdown was coming as soon as I saw this play

There seem to be a number of players that don’t know the basic mechanics of an appeal.
