The thing that fascinates me about this little culture is that once you marry someone you apparently abandon your former family. Maybe that's how they got around the squick of marrying their siblings? They somehow have it firmly in their heads that marrying someone establishes a new family that doesn't have any relation to their old family. That would explain why the siblings have different names, one family had to pick a new name to establish themselves as separate than the other one.

That would explain why the boy said his uncle 'used to be' the brother to his father, and why that lady said the old man 'used to be' her father.
