In recognition of the vital contributions educators make in shaping the nation, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos grace the 2024 National Teachers’ Month at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City on October 3, 2024.
With the theme, ‘Together4Teachers: Appreciation. Admiration. Approval. Attention,’ the celebration honors the tireless dedication of Filipino educators and underscores their crucial role in nation-building.
Under the Administration of President Marcos Jr., the Department of Education (DepEd) has launched several initiatives aimed at uplifting and upskilling teachers. Led by Secretary Juan Edgardo ‘Sonny’ Angara, these efforts focus on reducing administrative burdens, ensuring fair compensation and providing essential support for educators.
Key initiatives include:
1. The ‘MATATAG Curriculum’ which allows schools to adjust class schedules to better align with teachers' workloads.
2. The ‘Expanded Career Progression System’ designed to enhance professional development and ensure that no teacher retires at the Teacher I level.
3. A Performance Management Task Force to streamline performance assessments and alleviate administrative burdens.
4. Public school teachers now receive 30 days of vacation service credits, increased from 15.
5. The Updated Salary Schedule in National Budget Circular No. 594, aimed at attracting and retaining skilled educators.
6. The Teacher Effectiveness and Competencies Enhancement Project (TEACEP), in collaboration with the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and the World Bank (WB), focuses on improving teacher training in literacy and numeracy.
7. The ‘Kabalikat sa Pagtuturo Act’ which increases the annual teaching allowance and introduces a medical allowance for public school teachers.
8. Teachers can claim benefits under the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) for work-related and non-work accidents.
9. The World Teachers’ Day Incentive Benefit which provides a PhP1,000 benefit each year on October 5 to recognize the essential role of teachers.
Furthermore, DepEd is implementing comprehensive policies to enhance employee welfare, including well-being initiatives, updated recognition programs, inclusive hiring practices, mental health support, accessible healthcare through PhilHealth and affordable housing solutions.
Today’s celebration was established by Republic Act (R.A.) No. 10743 which declares the fifth day of October each year as National Teachers' Day.
