As you’ll find out the DEVELOPMENT eventually resulted in the Aston Martin DB7 and Jaguar XK8, thanks to the tenacity of Tom Walkinshaw and Ian Callum.
The cars took on the code names XJ41 for the coupe and the Convertible being known as XJ42 - they were under envelopment as early as 1980, and if things had gone to plan would have been released as the F-Type in 1984/86 time frame. The initial idea was for a N/A small straight six, rear wheel drive sports car, perhaps in the vein of a TVR Tasmin or Lotus Esprit or even the Ford Capri.
But the whole thing seemed to go pear shaped without any entrepreneurial leadership. There was even talk of 4 wheel drive and twin turbo. All came to a screeching hold in 1989 when Ford bought Jaguar.
