Understanding Camera Metering Modes: Evaluative, Center Weighted, Partial, Spot - Which one should you use?

Many photographers leave their camera in the default metering mode without fully understanding why we have a choice of metering modes and what the effect is of each metering mode on the image. How does Evaluative metering differ from Center Weighted and what makes Partial better than Spot metering?

We step through the metering modes available to digital photographers, evaluating the best mode for a number of scenarios.

Using the optimal metering mode for a photograph is the first step in taking control of your RAW images. At best it can transform the picture, at the least, save much tiresome work in post processing!
