That seems like the professional version of holding a flashlight under your face when telling a horror story.

Like, this is the first rule of cinematic.
Always record from shadow side

Get a smaller light and put it behind you so that is tecnically in frame but you are inf front of it. Then maybe even add a bit of mist.

It's done to make a shot have more "depth"
Not make it cinematic perse
But we do precieve it as such

I like how you said it looks more dramatic and not more cinematic. :)

this is not a rumor
it's common cinematography knowledge
what you have going on is called split lighting

That's why it's important to keep upstage lights

Actually you did film the shadow side at the first try. It depends where do you look. At the beginning you were looking to the left but it you look on the right side it will be dramatically different

For anyone curious as to why it looks better, the current theory is that light coming from the same side makes it look like a stage performance, giving it the effect of looking ameteur.

You could try adding a dim light where you tried the light first so you can get more facial expression

This is called short light and broad light. The "shadowside" is the short light. Tons of tutorials of this online!

I am not a professional videographer
But I think, to make any scenario dramatic we just need to use exaturation.
We need to use the elements and colours to show the message metaphorically.

I always take selfies next to a bright light with the shadowed side showing because i look 120% more handsome 😅

Why this looks bettwr is about creating depth and intresting from for your eye, when the light is in the background your eye has to serch for it more so to say, and you can also more clearly tell the form of an object. Backlight is usaly the default for lighting any scene
