Are Mixed Class Dorms Better Than All Freshman Dorms?

At the University of Delaware, freshmen have no choice but to be placed into all-freshman dorms. Here I talk about my experience of mixed-class dorms at Oberlin, and explain how and why I think mixed-class dorms could help promote a more vibrant student culture, help older students pass knowledge and wisdom to new students, and protect students from some of the more dangerous and extreme forms of alcohol use.

I am hoping to see the University of Delaware, and other schools that do not do so, at least offer incoming freshmen the choice of mixed-class dorms.

Great points, Alex! This isn't something I've ever thought about because I only went to one college, and the housing wasn't separated by class as much, and it was also small, so there was a lot of intermingling between classes. But I can see how the issues you brought up would be worse in a college where freshmen were separated socially from the other classes.
