It is actually like one of the most brutal and saddening death scenes in movie history, in my opinion. He does sound so scared, and it's so painful, and... slow. You know? "I'm afraid... my mind is going.... I can... feel it." And then he sings Daisy :<

I feel sorry for poor HAL despite he killed Discovery crew.

I think when Hal says i'm Afraid He really meant it

And Hall wouldn't kill anyone if he wasn't forced to lie,

I'm really fell sorry for Hall :-(

Steven Mort, you really didn't get it, did you? HAL was driven insane by a clash between his general directive to disclose information as accurately as possible, and a more mission specific directive to cover the true nature of the mission. You can see from the chess scene that he is making small errors, exacerbated by forcing himself to go easy on Poole. HAL is the most realistic member of the crew, with genuine emotions, whilst the humans are almost not human, being completely apathetic, even under duress. The Daisy Bell scene was meant to be the saddest part of the movie; I know it was for me *sniff*

That's actually wrong. He killed them so he didn't have to lie to them. He was programmed to do as he was told, and to tell the truth. The crew didn't know the real reason they were going to Jupiter. HAL did, but the President ordered him Not to tell them. So he was stuck in a "Hofstadter-Moebius loop", reducing HAL to paranoia. Therefore, HAL made the decision to kill the crew, thereby allowing him to obey both his hardwired instructions to report data truthfully and in full.
