Haven’t watched this yet, but I have to say: I’m a bit surprised that “Sir Duke” didn’t make it into this one. However, I’m still stoked to watch this! Always fun watching you all!

EWF and Tower of Power need to be in there - maybe a part 2?

How can you talk about horns and not talk about Tower of Power? :)

"Uptown Funk" horn arrangement is almost identical to bridge horns in Michael Jackson's "Jam"

As a longtime horn section player, I am so happy to see a video like this. Definitely needs a part 2. How can you not include EW&F? Specifically their cover of “Got to Get You into my Life” - absolutely brilliant arrangement. I read somewhere that Maurice White wrote the arrangement on the bus.

I would love a video solely on Chicago! Saw them live a couple weeks ago and they are astounding.

Regarding the flugelhorn in the Jerry Hey chart; I read somewhere (may have been an interview with Jerry Hey, or perhaps Chuck Findley) that on these high, funky, trumpet-heavy tracks they used to set the tape to half speed (after tracking the main parts), and double the trumpet parts with flugelhorns (at half the tempo and one octave down, obviously). Then, when setting the tape back to normal speed, the result was these amazingly FAT sounding, yet super high pitched, trumpets. I really wanna try that some time... Great episode, guys! Keep it up!

Clear evidence that it's impossible to stay completely still when a Michael Jackson track drops. BTW, the horn section in Chicago cover band Leonid & Friends is BANANAS.

:: A little mention to Manu Dibango for the inspiration: the 'Soul Makossa' horn line is what gave the bass synth and the guitar lines ::

Jerry Hey has been my all-time favourite horn arranger, but my favourite group is the Earth, Wind and Fire Horns and the The Phenix Horns, "In The Stone", "September" and "That's The Way Of The World" have such brilliant horn arrangements.

you guys could do a whole episode about jerry hey & his horn sections / Arrangements which he did for a lot of people. Al jarreau, Michael Jackson, Earth Wind & Fire, Aretha, Chaka Khan, George Benson and many many more

You should have included Tower Of Power's - What Is Hip? the live version in Chicago of 1977. That performance is a masterclass. Please do have an analysis on this song. :)

I feel ya'll have hit a good timing/length/groove on these recent ones, they don't feel as short/cut off as some earlier ones, which lets us digest/learn more, good stuff, thanks!

The first two Chicago albums slap so *hard*. Make Me Smile is a banger, sang and written by Kath (who had an incredible Baritone voice).

Another great episode. Also, Rick Beato would have a field day with the list of writers for Uptown Funk 😂

When I was young, the horn lines that got me exited to play my horn were from Phil Collins - "Sussudio, " Michael Jackson - "Jam, " Prince - "America (Live 1985), " Stevie Wonder - "Superstitious."

6:20 "Compression is for kids" - direct quote from Bruce Swedien, Sound Engineer for Michael Jackson for many years; though I'm not sure if he worked on Wannabe Startin Somethin

These three are great, but there are SO many other contenders - "My Old School" by Steely Dan, "Lucretia Mac Evil" by Blood Sweat & Tears, "No Reply at All" by Genesis, "Zomby Woof" by Zappa...the list goes on! I'm in for a Part 2...Part 3...
