No one wants a phone crawling with germs, and they certainly don’t want one they can’t unlock. Here are four important steps on how to prepare your old iPhone or Android before sending it off to trade-in or resale services like Gazelle or Decluttr, or even just a young niece or nephew.

Just so everyone knows: if you factory reset your device it will take care of Step 2 for you. There is no need to sign out of apps if the factory reset does that for you. Additionally, if you have a newish phone you shouldn't be concerned with disk recovery tools as the data is encrypted on the storage. That way you don't have to worry about someone retrieving your data from storage after the fact.

Better steps for iPhone:
1-back up your phone to your Mac with a cable and turn on encrypted backup
2-simply press “erase/transfer phone”in general under iPhones settings and it will sign you out of iCloud and all apps and erase your phone.

Fun fact for android users when you delete everything on your phone anyone can restore what you deleted from your device and it’s all done with an app.
