Constructive criticism is always good. But when you high five someone while talking badly about them, that's rude and disrespectful. My question is, why he could not tell her himself when he met her? Selena plays an American who married a Mexican Narc of course her Spanish is not meant to sound perfect. Many Mexican Americans don't speak or even understand Spanish. The fact that she continues to push herself to do new things and lift the Mexican people as part of her culture is honorable.

As much as I like Selena I do think that Derbez has a point, I don't think Selean did great acting even though she really tried. She should just take it as positive criticism.

I haven’t seen the movie nor do I think i will. I dont care for it. However, Derbez is one to criticize his work in american movies was tragic and unfortunately I had the misfortune to see his work in Mexican TV its a joke.

That's so ridiculous! They are actors who have spoken in another language in a film and do not know very well what they are saying, but that does not mean that they should not act. Selena's character does not require her to also speak the language well and that is explained in the film.

He's a great actor and he's very good in Spanish movies he didn't say it in a bad way if y'all don't know Spanish and watched what he said then you won't understand

Don't they have the actors audition and do table reads before they start filming?... I agree with him but I think this would have been very obvious before production of the film even started 🤷‍♀️

I want to say i understand where both of them are coming from. But I emphasize with Selena. I just like Selena Gomez I'm born here in the United States. And spanish was not really my first language, it was my second language. But because of how strict my family was, I started to learn Spanish and I lived in mexico when I was a little kid, I lived in the city of mexico the city of Mexico is one of the biggest cities of the country. And I remember my mom telling me when I was trying to speak Spanish. Because my mom was the one who taught me Spanish. And I was very arrogant that I did not want to learn spanish until one day She told me a lot of those kids are better and a lot of people over there will say shit to you. Because you're a latino and for you not to speak spanish, they're gonna make fun of you. And she was right. A lot of those kids are very mean a lot of the people over there. If they hear you not speak Spanish. They will say shit to you. And also, my mom, she told me 1 day you're going to encounter somebody who does not speak English, and because you look Latino, they will think you speak Spanish. I learned, and I spent years perfecting my spanish, now i speak spanish way more than I speak english because I realized that I express myself way more better in spanish. Then I do in english. And I love it when people think i'm from mexico, but the shock value that they give when I tell them i'm actually from the U.S. it's funny, but yes, I do understand Selena because I know what it's like when you're criticized for not speaking a language that your family speaks. I also understand Eugenio because he probably grew up in an area where they teach other mexicans to criticize another person who does not speak their language and it's sad. And when I hear them, my two best friends who are born here i do my very best not to criticize them, because I know what it's like and they tell me that they have gotten so used to being americanized, they don't speak spanish, and that they feel weird speaking spanish. And that's why I give classes to those who want to learn spanish

He had a point and I get where he’s coming from too because Eugenio himself studied English and put a lot of effort into knowing the language before he started making movies in English in the US. And if you watch his movies you can understand what he’s saying and you know he is aware of what he’s saying too.

Meh I think he’s right. I think that what he’s getting at is the fact that just knowing the language isn’t necessarily enough— as different words carry different meanings depending on the culture. He is pointing out that as an American actress whose culture is primarily American, Selena could not do the role the justice that he thinks it deserved. IMO I think there are probably plenty of actresses who are more connected to the culture that could have done a better job, but the opportunity was taken from them because Selena has a bigger platform and is more likely to get the job despite being less qualified.
