Egyptian Street Food - 24 HOURS in Alexandria, Egypt!!

Today we’re going on an ultimate Egyptian street food tour in Alexandria, on the Mediterranean Coast of Egypt! This is the second largest city in Egypt, and it has a completely different feel from Cairo with a different food scene. So our mission is to eat some of the best local Egyptian food today in Alexandria!

It’s also special because Abanoub, who has been taking me around Egypt - this is his hometown, and so we are in very good hands with an Alexandrian local!

I love how as an Alexandrian foodie, I was able to identify the places by the kitchen alone. Makes me feel proud.

I was in Alexandria for 3 weeks in 2015. From Southern California. The best meals I ate were cooked in homes. My friends aunts cooked several times. A fish dinner with spices I’m not familiar with was one of the best meals. Another time we had a simple meal of braised chicken, rice and peas in tomato sauce and one of the aunts made a handmade juice of mango and carrot that was amazing. And another time we had a feast of many foods…the best being rice stuffed zucchini. A little restaurant that we bought chicken and rice pilaf at was so simple but so amazing that we went there three times. My favorite food was the fish dinner, the fava beans with bread, rice, pickled vegetables, and the coffee. I kept telling my friend that I was happy to eat these things… beans, rice, pickled vegetables, bread and coffee but he kept trying to take me to eat other foods. The most simple foods are the best. I also loved koshari. I came home and cooked fava beans and tried to make the coffee. Oh my goodness the coffee was the best! Lol.

No matter where you go for food, all Egyptian cooks are artists. I've been to Balba when I was in Alexandria. What an experience. The food is out of this world. The owner and the managers are masters of ceremony. So gracious, filled with the spirit of Egyptian hospitality. I think I saw Micah poke his head into a scene. That was fun!!! He will be a Chef one day.
