SKITTLES AND WATER EXPERIMENT FOR CHILDREN - RAINBOW MAGIC
This is a great experiment to try that introduces children/kids to the concept of diffusion using skittles and water. Diffusion is the chemical process where molecules move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. Just like the air your breathing right now diffuses through your lungs and into your bloodstream and the carbon dioxide waste diffuses from your bloodstream back into your lungs.
You make a circle using the Skittles on a plate and then add warm water gently, covering the Skittles. After a few seconds, the sugar and food colouring contained within the Skittles will diffuse out into the water and create the pattern that you see in the video. You can perform this experiment easily with cold or warm water, but the reaction will be slower with cold water, the increased temperature of the warm water acts as a catalyst.
Try this yourself and see what results you get. Try using different sweets instead of just Skittles and see if the result is the same. Let us know in the comments below what results you get!
