Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela, Ethiopia [Amazing Places]

The 11 medieval monolithic cave churches were built or rather carved from the rock by king Lalibela in the 13th century to create a 'New Jerusalem'. In the video: walk around the 11 Lalibela churches, beginning with a morning mass at Bet Giyorgis, and following with Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Maryam, Bet Danaghel, Bet Gabriel-Rafael, Bet Emanuel, Bet Abba Libanos. At the very end - Yemrehanna Kristos church, located in a natural cavern, 40 km from Lalibela, predating the Lalibela churches by a century. The Lalibela Rock Hewn churches are UNESCO World Heritage site.

My husband and I have taken our McPherson College (Kansas, USA) students to the rock hewn churches in Lalibela, Ethiopia, eight times. If you get up very early on Sunday morning, that is when the churches come alive with all the priests dancing their holy ritual. our students love it.
In recent years, we have, taken school supplies for children in the local schools as a service project. We, also, deliver Personal Energy Transportation wheelchairs to people who have no medical recourse in that country. Those who are to receive the wheelchairs, however, must be approved by the government BEFORE we can send the chairs to them. Thus far, we have delivered 25 to Ethiopia.

My grandma used to tell me store about this place. She was born 5 miles away from Lalibela and this is the church she used to go when she was growing up. This church is very blessed.
