I have 2 things to say about this clip...
1. I like both versions of the song and I'm a JSU fan
2. That Doll on the 2nd row in the middle is thicker than cold oatmeal....
That is all

I liked the fact that jsu had some dynamic contrast, ant their sound was better. As usual, jsu bones shitted on su and so did btones.

JSU has a great arrangement that gets ruined at times because of the over blowing. The trumpets were drowned out from time to time but otherwise JSU was wonderful. SU was clean although for me; their arrangement seems detached. I give a slight edge to JSU

I really liked both arrangements but to what was SU thinking with there tubas JSU got the best tubas in the SWAC and JSU trumpets need more practice because you can not hear them at all I PICK JSU ANY DAY OF THE WEEK

Here's my 2 cents.

Both arrangements are on the button. Both of them powerful and packing a mean punch. But there are some differences.

SOUTHERN: more true to the original with the 1st verse being call-and-response with some blending, and for the chorus, Haymer did a smart thing by putting the baritones and trumpets on the melody and the mellos and trombones on the countermelody the 1st half of the chorus, and the mellos and trumpets playing the melody with the T-bones and baritones playing separate countermelodies and melding for the infamous 2nd half. Tuba rips at the beginning of the arrangement and that crankin' tuba break are NICE, though the tubas are a little rough around the edges on the break. Plus, they had to cut off while the ball's in play right before they had a chance to crank the chorus. But it can only get better as the season goes on.

JACKSON STATE: MAAB's arrangement. 1st verse has the B-tones calling and the trumpets and mellos responding with the T-bones riding the whole verse with some blending in the middle. The one downside of this arrangement is in the chorus.
The B-tones and mellos are SITTING on top of the chorus, the mellos during the 1st half with the B-tones taking up some of the melody, all B-tones during the 2nd half, with the trumpets barely being heard through the whole chorus. Add to the fact that the Boom was seated in the Skybox side of the Liberty Bowl only amp'd up their sound even though they're formidable on their own. But other than that it's straight.

All in all I give the slight edge to SU, even though their B-tones are a bit thin, but they'll get fuller. But when I say that both SU and JSU have the best 2 arrangements of Dark Horse, I'm as serious as a seizure.

REMINDER: The Human Jukebox will take the Prairie View game off this weekend due to them taking the Bama A&M game next month.

Two different approaches to the song, they both did good jobs representing their prospective styles...

SUs arrangement was more clean and closest to the actual song. So in that regard they we better. But if you know anything about specific sounds and how arrangements are attributed to specifics hbcu bands, you know that JSUs arrangement was typical of their sound; it was extremely powerful. A predominantly white college band would say the arrangement was sloppy and at the beginning you could not tell what sing it was. Jsu focused on the melody and powered it up in usual JSU fashion. They did great. I'm a lover of power, I give it to JSU.

Jackson State is more balanced you can clearly hear their woodwind section, southern thinks that having a large brass section make them sound better but it does not. This one went to the Sonic boom on clarity power and balance

JSU arrangement was better in my opinion. SU sound was clear, but JSU can blow them out the stands with this sounds

Outside of how the Boom's version crescendos', I kind of like the way SU's starts off. About midway through, I'm not feeling it, and I don't like how the tubas sound on the break before they have to get soft. About the only thing after the beginning I like on the SU version is how the trumpets stay on top of the band
