Thumbnail not showing on YouTube? How to Fix Youtube Grey Thumbnails FAST!
I discovered in horror some grey thumbnails on uploaded videos with uploaded images. Change the thumbnail format and it works like magic. It's really important to have a proper youtube thumbnail on all videos because a grey box will kill traffic, SEOs and click-rate more than anything else. I was happy to see that this easy trick works like a charm.

I too had this "grey blank thumbnail" issue and it's been frustrating. I didn't try this secret method because YT setups the Thumbnail automatically and I want to use it. What I think happened is YT created a "bad" or a Thumbnail that does not meet the specific Thumbnail criteria and used it giving me the "grey blank thumbnail". For me the secret was to use the third Thumbnail from the Thumbnail list, saved it, and it worked!

Perfect, thanks a lot for such easy help! I had the same issue with my vertical video. It was enough to upload my thumbnail picture with the size you recommend, no need to change any video parameters. Wonderful!

Doesn't work. I uploaded a test video with the same thumbnail that refuses to work and it shows just fine on the test video. It seems to be that if you don't publish with the custom thumbnail in the first place, this problem occurs.
