Franz Liszt orchestrated his famous Mephisto Waltz No. 1 for Piano, S. 514, as part of the set "2 Episodes from Lenau's Faust", S. 110, in 1861. The complete orchestral work consists of two tone-poems based on Episodes 11 and 6 of Lenau's Faust: "Der nächtliche Zug" (The Nightly Train), and "Der Tanz in der Dorfschenke" (The Dance in the Village Inn). Liszt dedicated these episodes to his student Carl Tausig.

This is Liszt at his best. The transcription is a work of genius and brings out the logic of the piano original through very effective and nuanced orchestration.

The best version of the work continues to be the piano+orchestra version performed by Kataaris

Didn’t Liszt write this first and then transcribed it for piano?

It's my first time by hearing this one.

2:55 must be tricky to play on the strings due to the lack of open strings I believe.
