Pro Drummer Teaches You the New Orleans Mambo

This is a super fun groove and style to play. These grooves will work in a lot of situations. I’ve been on gigs where the band leader might say that the beat is a “mambo” or a “rumba”, but usually, they don’t mean an authentic Cuban mambo or rumba, they often mean something along the lines of these beats in this lesson.

Brilliant. I was in a "mambo? rumba?" situation only a few weeks ago with a saxophonist I admire but had never played with. I faked it ok, but would have really enjoyed having this lick to pull out on demand. Thank you for the lesson here!

Reminds me of Eh La bas! I’m definitely trying this on the next gig 🤘

Fantastic! More like this please!! Could this be morphed into that family of grooves that includes Ray Charles' What'd I Say? Those double toms seem like they're related to the double tones of various conga patterns. Another thing that would be cool to hear your take on is how congas were used by the Meters, and who in NOLA used them first, and how "hand-to-hand" differs from the "manoteo" Cuban approach, and especially how the drummer changes and adapts when there is or isn't a conga playing on the gig. Still waiting on the edge of my chair for "Groove Alchemy II". Your "morphing" approach in the priceless first volume has been the most valuable single thing I've found as I've devoured all the drum education resources that are out there.

Hey man, I like the way you explain things, thanks. I really appreciate it. And about the snare, that’s one of my favorite snares, I was actually planning to buy one but if I’m lucky enough to win it that would be awesome 😎

Stanton: Thanks. I play this to Comin' Home Baby in a jazzy brass band but had never figured out anything more than straight crotchets on the BD/HH. Any chance of the PDF?

Drum teachers HATE this SIMPLE trick, Try not to groove challenge (impossible)

Check out Ringo on The Beatles’ first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964.
Not exactly what Stanton’s demo-ing here, but a hybrid version.
Interestingly enough, Ringo leads all of his fills with his left hand, but plays all his groove patterns leading with his right hand - including this one!
