Mergers are great for passengers. Shorter connections and more routes are some advantages.

Probably this gentleman gets paid by the airline industry. When deregulated the US air fares were much lower than then ones in the EU. Then in the US all airlines merged and you technically have 4 big ones left with fares that are at least twice as high as in the EU. In the EU you can fly since deregulation in the 90s across the continent and back for less than $ 100 where in the US that is at least double due to the lack of competition. Europe has many more airlines competing in the same market.
