Sewer Camera Video: Sewer Camera - Tree Roots in Sewer - DIY Sewer Inspection Camera - rootx

In this video I show how to remove tree roots from sewer line by showing how to unclog main drain line with a sewer snake yourself. A stopped up drain can be frustrating, especially when you have tree roots in your main line. The drain clogs can be an ongoing problem. To fix this problem you can rent a mechanical auger or drain snake to clear out the roots in your sewer line yourself. It is really affordable and not too hard for do it yourself-ers. To have a professional camera your line with an inspection camera is super expensive. I made a DIY sewer camera to confirm that I had tree roots in sewer line, so I knew exactly where the tree roots where. That made unclogging the main line and remove the roots a lot less overwhelming, as I knew exactly what the problem was and where. I was able to retrieve the tree roots from the sewer and cut the roots in the sewer with the root cutter or roto rooter (roto-rooter). I then could re run the sewer camera into my main sewer line to confirm the tree root removal from main sewer line. I could then see that most of the tree roots were gone with the help of the diy sewer camera. I also discuss some products used treat roots in sewer line such as copper sulfate, zep root kill, rock salts, and rootx (RootX root x rootX ROOTX). You can then later inspect your sewer line with the sewer camera after using the chemical treatment to kill tree roots.

Thanks for this. I'm real cautious of jobs because I live in a 100-year-old house and often a seemingly small project ends up being the end of the damn world. It still looks like an overwhelming job but you took the mystery out of it and it's something that I can do. I'll be on edge the entire time in fear I'll find out the entire sewer pipe to the road will have to be replaced for 5 million dollars. I think I'm going to get that beer . That will help me through this.

My house had this issue recently and good thing the HOA was responsible for the repair and not me. It was a $10, 000 job. They tore up the front lawn and replaced a 3 foot section of the sewer line. Roots all in there, 7 feet down. I have the whole job on my security cameras. I'm gonna put the files together and make a video. I am so damn lucky the HOA paid for it.
edit: Foam Root killer works. I used that before the service was done.

I guess I should have made a video of this, but I'll recite what I did for my daughter's house. She had a clog in her main line, 60 feet from the roof stack, and it was indeed roots. I knew she had clay pipe from when I was digging with a shovel to plant something for my wife... So, I measured down from the stack, came out to the back yard (where there had been a septic tank years ago) went around the house to the street, and stopped at 60 feet. I laid down a tarp and started digging.

Don't hate on me, but it was Florida soil (no clay, no rocks). I came within 1 foot of the joint and indeed! there were roots. I bought a 2' section of PVC & two clay-to-PVC rubber couplers, used diamond blade on my angle grinder (Don't even THINK about using a metal blade on a SawZall. The clay will laugh at you.)

Within 15 minutes, I had the 2' section of clay including the Clay joint cut out and the PVC with rubber couplers installed & tightened. All that was left was to fill/compact, fill/compact.
The entire project cost less than $50 in parts and a few hours of my time.

I have to say, that clay had been there for probably 50 years and looked brand new on the inside. It's a shame the joints leak as they do and attract roots.

Loved this video. My line is 300 plus feet so I really empathized with you when you mentioned you had 150 more feet of line. Your video has given me far more options than the tradesmen who are saying "you need a new septic field"

Thanks for the tutorial, gave it a shot after watching this and all went well for once. Tool rental was under $100 which was much better then the $300+ a local plumber quoted me.

Just be aware that once a root bundle has become engaged in the spiral bit, running it in reverse, even just a few turns, can cause the bit to ‘unthread’ from the root knot, become disengaged from it, and fail to remove it. It would be like running a corkscrew well into a cork, then when resistance is encountered in removing it, simply because it is tight; then mistakenly thinking that the cork has somehow become physically “stuck“; reversing the direction of the corkscrew; (I. E. lefty-loosey) thus backing it out of the cork, leaving everything right where it was; except now with a damaged cork. Once the root ball is engaged, you may have to pull really hard to drag it out of there; in fact, you may even have to go back and re-engage it. In my view, running the coil in reverse is a last ditch procedure only resorted to when it appears that something is in fact stuck, like, maybe you have engaged a cluster of roots that just can’t be pulled out that way, and that it is time to get in there with the actual cutter, meanwhile, the only way to extract the cable and bit is to run it in reverse.… Just a thought.

Very useful video. Two contractors came with no results. I just rented a snake like yours and did myself.

I'm glad you explained this so well. I just bought an old house and it's been one plumbing problem after another. First the old gas hot water heater in the basement went kaput right as I moved in. So I replaced it and moved it upstairs because the basement apparently floods easily. Which it has now several times and I haven't even been here 2 months. Then I can't take a bath without the system backing up because the release of all the bath water at once is too much for the system. And the plumbing hasn't been vented properly either so the kitchen sink gurgles loudly every 30-60 minutes all day and night. So the last plumber said I had roots in the main line and to get some foaming root killer which I had never heard of before. So that is my next step. 😟

Great explanation on using this machine. I’m looking to buy one of these. A couple family members have issues with roots in the pipes. Few years back they charged near $400+ just to cut roots. This unit will pay itself off in one job.
