A Story of Chernobyl Plant Liquidator That Wasn’t Included in the HBO Series

HBO’s Chernobyl became the most successful series according to the IMDb portal ratings. The authors spent several years creating it. They spoke with eyewitnesses and perhaps for the first time showed exactly how the plant workers acted immediately after the reactor exploded. Even for Ukrainians who seemed to have heard and seen enough stories about Chernobyl, the series became a surprise. In particular, it turned out that two of the three liquidators-divers - Bespalov and Ananenko (Baranov died) - survived. They live on Kyiv’s left bank where they received apartments after evacuation. Liudmyla Ignatenko, the wife of a fireman, is also alive.

The above-mentioned heroes are not the only ones in Chernobyl’s history. Hromadske journalists went to Pripyat with one of the liquidators, Oleksiy Breus. It was he who last pressed a button on the control panel of the fourth block.

How it must feel for him to come back to Chernobyl after everything he has experienced, we can only imagine. Thank you for uploading this.

Creepy how auto captions gets the music in the beginning as "laughter"

The translator needs to slow down. I would actually have been fine with subtitles.

Very interesting story and video, but the mushmouth translator speaks way too fast and the Russian audio mix is far too loud.

The term Liquidators covers a large spectrum of people as far as the Chernobyl story is told, from firemen to women tasked with removing food from Pripyat apartments to stop the spread of disease.
But he sounds more like an operator, perhaps he did participate in the clean up, but it doesn't sound like it.
If HBO had included all of the people involved in the Chernobyl story, the series would have been about 10 years long!

I visited Chernobyl back in 2017, I wanted to visit the controllers apartments but it wasn't possible, it's really chilling to see both Toptunovs apartment as well as hearing this man talk about his experience.

This video deserves far more views.

Fascinating first person account, thanks for sharing. However, the "doubling" of native speaker and English translation marred this piece. Please remix and publish with the Russian talker's audio suppressed or greatly attenuated. I tried to use the YouTube CC tool but it was confused by the mixing of two people speaking at the same time.

I have a great interest in Chernobyl and what happened there, unfortunately the audio in this film is totally useless.

I understand the catastrophic design flaw, but the real cause of the accident was the bureaucrats rush to amp up the power when it should have been shut down and amped up slowly.
It’s important to note the design flaws so that they’re not repeated. But it’s equally important to note the flaws in the government inspectors attitudes. So arrogant to override the advice of the plants’ employees to WAIT. This attitude can cause disasters regardless of design in any potentially volatile system.
And no, I’m not an expert, just a potential victim who prefers to rely on experts with politics interfering.

the kgb forbided him to talk about the unsafe emergency stop button. This is additional evidences that they knew that RBMK reactors were unsafe.

It looks like everything has been looted. Furniture, wiring curtains- everything. Someone took all this irradiated stuff off some where

What a mess. I remember thinking how it felt like the end of the world when I first heard about a nuclear reactor exploding in Russia. Though I live thousands of miles away from the site, it felt like it was happening to me. Same with Fukushima.

Yeah the engineers that designed that reactor should have been made aware that they were going to try to run this test that resulted in this, I feel sure that they would have instructed them to not try to run this test at the end of the fuel cycle life with graphite tipped control rods you're going to blow up that reactor! And that's exactly what happened too, the test was a catastrophic failure!
