‘What the hell’: Biden snaps at CNN reporter

US President Joe Biden has apologised to CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins after lashing out at her following his high-profile summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Ms Collins asked the president what makes him “so confident” President Putin will change his behaviour when it comes to Russia’s involvement in cyberattacks and its treatment of political prisoners.

“I'm not confident. What the hell, what do you do all the time?” President Biden said.

"When did I say I was confident? What I said was ... what will change their behavior is if the rest of the world reacts to them and it diminishes their standing in the world."

The president subsequently apologised for the outburst.

The comments followed a high-pressure meeting between President Biden and his Russian counterpart in Geneva, Switzerland.

The two leaders talked face-to-face for around four hours – shorter than Mr Biden's advisers had said they expected – but he later admitted the pair did not need to spend more time talking.

Speaking at a solo news conference, Mr Biden said he told President Putin he will always raise issues of "fundamental human rights", including jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny and two Americans "wrongfully imprisoned" in Russia.

Mr Biden also said he thought there was a "genuine prospect to significantly improve relations between the countries without us giving up a single thing based on principle and values".
