RSM wanted to give a quick video about the bird flu that's sweeping the United States and other parts of the world. No fear, just knowledge - learn what RSM is doing (and not doing) to keep her backyard chicken flock safe. PLEASE NOTE THAT RSM IS NOT A VET NOR A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL, THIS IS HER OPINION BASED ON HER RESEARCH ONLY.

I appreciate your providing personal information on the subject. I am now ready to purchase on babies and I was a bit concerned. Again, thank you!

As a U.K. chicken keeper we are used to dealing with bird flu outbreaks yearly and have had more than one lockdown in the last 10years (we had a similar lockdown last year) It is brought in yearly with the migratory birds like geese. Usually it’s a low pathogenic strain causing minimal illness, and no lockdown but there is the chance of a highly pathogenic strain which can cause quick death in a greater than 95% of the birds who contract it and it is highly contagious especially through shared feed and waterers (lower risk through faeces) I work in agri research so am used to biosecurity and your advice is absolutely spot on! I keep separate boots for my chicken area, nobody is in there apart from me, I have foot dip (look up your local advice for disinfectants I used Jeyes Fluid) I have bird netting and covered run so no wild birds have access. Also keep vermin at bay with bait and traps, as they can also bring in disease. Fab advice 👍🏻

All good points and excellent advice! I would add that it is unwise to use untreated ground water or collected rain water for your birds, due to the high likelihood of it being contaminated by wild birds. Especially during years of increased cases of avian flu, you will want to treat all the water for your flocks as if humans were going to be drinking that water. Also be sure your feeders and waterers are disinfected daily.

I have bird/hawk netting up over a huge chicken yard and it is attached the enclosed run. I stopped free ranging because of the hawks and in lost two hens last year. The hawks try to get my hens but the netting has proven to work great

Is there a source that we can use to get the latest information on bird flu? Such as when it is over and the latest local cases? I also live in Texas (Dallas) I am a new chicken momma and have been learning a lot from you, thank you.

I wish I could remember who it was, but I watched a video from a YouTuber whose birds were hit with it. The birds in covered runs didn't get sick. The birds under only netting got it. Unfortunately, the authorities culled his entire flock.

I read that feeding elderberries can help keep the birds healthy. Makes sense.

Good tips!! A family member told us to get rid of our backyard flock of 10. Absolutely not!!! I’m just keeping up with my normal cleaning and maintenance and watching my girls health. I also ordered them 2 5 lb bags of grub terra. Extra healthy treats can’t hurt!😂

Any advice for free range chickens? I live in town and I do have birds around. My chickens are doing good. I'm watching and this bird flu scares me.

I work hard to keep my chickens immune system best it can be with quality organic food. I do t have any of their feeders in the run but all I. The coop so it will not attract wild birds. The run is covered. They are not crowded and have plenty of room. Best I can do.

I heard about it last summer and didn’t feed my birds, but then heard it has passed. Guess it’s not over yet??

I wondered if you planted peppermint around your chicken area to keep rodents away.

Thank you for the Greek plain yogurt tip, first time I've heard that I can give my chickens yogurt (makes sense to enhance their enzimes)...
How often can I give it to them, once a week or once a month to keep them healthy?

You have a very nice system and a beautiful flock. I am also a homesteader. I have been raising hens for the eggs since 2015. I am also a 'conspiracy tinfoil.' Everything we are seeing is by design. The criminal oligarchs want to starve humanity to death. Just look at the food processing plants and fertilizer plants burning and exploding to the ground. All by design.

You are smart. I sub'd to your channel. Keep up the good work. People need to learn how to be self-sufficient just like in the old days. Gubmint and politicians will not save us.

God Bless.
