I like your method better than another I watched that completely tore the waterpump housing apart. Just for info, the pump fins will bend when the shaft turns when installing it and stay that way. Rubbing on the inside of the collar creates a seal so it can draw the water. The problem is they get hard and brittle with age or especially running it with no water which will destroy the pump in a matter of seconds. As long as it's flexible it's fine. It's critical to have the foot submerged in water or have a hose attached with water coming out before starting. I've seen them burn up completely in a matter of seconds without water.

This was very informative and helpful. Was able to to replace the impeller with ease. One thing to point out where to have the gear when you put the unit back together (forward/neutral/reverse) . I had started out in neutral but must have bumped it into forward when I was pushing back in, and then I was limited to forward and neutral only. Dropped unit back off put in neutral and second time was a charm as is working.

Good tutorial !! If I may add a little input tho !!? (Not looking to play the smartass at all here) .. you did the right thing by mentioning to put some triple guard grease inside of the impeller housing!! But you forgot to include the impeller lower plate, especially near and around the shaft !! And that plate btw show some signs of wear, grooves where the impeller center ring sits ! It's not going to wreck the new impeller but since clearance tolerances aren't to specs because of those grooves it might cause lower performances from the water pump unit and/or slightly premature failure .

Having a ton of trouble getting my lower back on. I can only get is as far as having about 3 inchea left to go. Everything is lined up. Is there a certai position the gear shifterneeds to be in to get the lower unit on?

Great video..thanks....question there are 2 holes the the left of your inlet screens one above and one below the plate....my pump quit and I now have oil coming out of the top hole...I ordered a water pump kit that comes with everything in ng including new bolts for the pump housing...will this fix the oil coming out also...thanks for any help I can get out there

i have a 25 hp johnson similar year as the one in the video...and i replaced the waterpump with a new impeller and housing, however im not getting a very stong water pressure from the tell tale hose...more of a broken stream and seems weak . any suggestions ?

That little plastic piece on shift linkage is called a keeper. Johnson/Evinrude recommend replacing it.

My 2000 johnson 35hp outboard pees water from the pee port but it’s not filling the power head with water.. not sure what that’s about.. took the thermostat out and fired it up and it’s dry.. no water in engine.. any ideas?
