In this talk, we joined Chef Destiny in her Kitchen as she discusses the Indigenous foods of Canada, the impact colonization has had on food sovereignty and sustainability and her path to reclaiming her culture.

From Destiny:

"Hello & Aanii, my name is Chef Destiny. I am the owner and head chef of a personal chef business called FoodZen as well as the founder and executive chef of Cedar Spoon, an Indigenous catering company both based in Kitchener, Ontario.

I’m Indigenous on my mom’s side, part of the Ojibway tribe from Rainy River, Ontario. My mom was part of the sixties scoop, meaning she was taken from her community when she was 4 years old to live in foster care. When she was 6, she was adopted by a family here in Waterloo Region, where I was born and raised.

For many years we couldn’t celebrate our culture because we didn’t know what it meant to be Indigenous. Through the teaching of my adopted grandmothers, food became my love language and in turn, became my path to reconciliation and a way for me to heal and reconnect with my culture.

Food is holistic, it feeds the soul, it’s medicine. One of the best places to listen and learn is to break bread together and I’m excited to do that with you!

Thank you, Miigwetch"
