How To Improve Your First Move and Toss On The Serve I TENNIS SERVE

Should you toss or turn first at the start of your tennis service motion? That’s one of the most important areas to understand for developing an amazing tennis serve. Jeff Salzenstein addresses it by sharing a secret tennis tip to improve your first move and toss on the serve. This online tennis lesson will provide you the clarity and knowledge required to see instant results when you go out and take action on the tennis court.

Most tennis players are simply tossing the ball first and going up together, down together with their arms. This will not allow you to turn your hips and coil properly, which will limit your ability to generate effortless topspin and power on your tennis serve. For instance, Roger Federer starts to turn his shoulder first before tossing the ball; whereas, Alexander Zverev tends to toss the ball first and turn his shoulders slightly afterwards.

If you want to learn how to serve like the pros, get more disguise, coil, and topspin, Jeff recommends turning your shoulders first before you release the ball. He suggests pointing your tossing arm towards the net post or parallel to the baseline.

By turning at the beginning of the service motion, you’ll be able to load your back leg and push off the ground more effectively. Lastly, make sure that your tossing arm does not come back too far as this can hinder your ability to hit amazing and powerful tennis serves.

Thanks Jeff, yes, turning the shoulders first sends the perfect signal to the back leg for improving a platform serve. Pin point too, just don't unwind from it as you step through.

gosh that was the best explanation on the turn on the serve, was the missing piece on my serve that screwed up my toss.

Very useful video !
I used to turn then toss (especially on kick serve) but wasn't so aware of doing it. I think it can really help to develop good feeling of loading the serve.

What you are doing here is using your non-dominant hand/arm to expand your chest and to create torque in your upper back. Consistent with what you teach about using the off hand to balance the backhand and to guide the forehand. I like the idea of expanding the chest to get tension and torque. Very helpful.

Excellent learn-by-comparison Jeff, thank you! My coach is taking me through this exact progression now. I have much more easy power, but it will take some time to get my toss more consistent. Props for a toss lesson on a windy day!!!!

Great tip 👍! I took your advice on the stance by standing more parallel to the baseline and pointing my back foot towards the fence and it has helped immensely. I need to just incorporate the turn first before tossing and I am on my weigh to an improved serve!

You are confirming that what I'm doing is right. I toss parallel to baseline like Fed and it makes the turn a natural motion. I would recommend that tossing method to anyone though it's very hard to master.

A very useful tutorial. Thank you. I guess you should also give some gudance on the grip. I experienced diffrent grip creates different serve direction.

Thanks Jeff, this makes a lot of sense. I am currently re-building my service motion through the winter months, so without the pressure of competitive matches.
One question related to the toss and turn: Do you release the ball for the toss while you are still on your back foot? Or do you release as you are transfering your weight to the front foot. I find it hard to tell. If the former, then does that not make difficult to keep the toss in front? I would really appreciate a reply. From a fellow leftie! (Nice to see instructional footage without having to mirror everything in your mind.)
