The ability to write clear descriptive text to efficiently reflect the design into AI will give you an edge, otherwise it will take too many iterations to achieve final product.

That would be sick if someone could figure out how to put this on to a 3D printer so you can literally tell your 3D printer to make you something and you would get to have a surprise of what it came up with

This was a good test of a program that writes CAD macros. Ask AI why you need the gears. We still need people to ask these questions.

I taught a class doing this at our university - AI assisted design. We used Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT to do exactly this - give the AI a task and ask for OpenSCAD compatible code. Works great, right up until it doesn't. It falls apart pretty quickly. I think there's a long way to go here - even if it has some promise.

This is cool and all, but honestly. It is much faster and satisfying to just do the 3D modeling myself. Having to correct it so many times is annoying AF when I can do it myself so much faster. And it isn’t like learning 3D modeling is difficult.

I use AI for CAD, but specifically for calculating gear ratios and doing all gearbox math for me. I use ChatGPT o1 for this, and Claude for all the associated microcontroller programming.

awesome! Really powerful, and some great results. What I wonder is, if you have been able to get to a state where the LLM can actually apply some sort of understanding of the concept of the thing it created. Like, apply the gears to e.g. drive something else, now that it was positioned in a functional setup. But I guess not... this is where these concept LLMs come in, that''s going to be so huge.

I just tried this and asked it to write code for a 3rd generation 4Runner. It turned out looking like the USPS truck and I burst out laughing. lol. Though promising, it's still has a way to go. Cheers!

I think this is an obvious extension to the root image and language models. We have a LOT of CAD models of stuff to train an AI with. Inevitable. On top of that, full scan data of systems could be used to supplement the CAD library. Tons of potential.

Great. video, although it opens up a lot of follow ups, that we will probably have to check out ourselves. Curious question, is there a reason why you printed the stand in vertical orientation ?I believe printing it flat on one side could have worked too.

just wondering, is it opensource ? I'd like to try its limits and see if it is able to render and make complex structures with the good prompt

You could have asked it to optimize the final image for economic material use in 3d printing and to not compromise structural integrity while doing that. I might try that, to see the results. The other thing you could do if you really want to test its engineering skills is to make it design a gear set for a specific force or specific rotational speed on the output shaft, given some input shaft values.
