Bees and butterflies play an important role in the pollination of plants and the production of crops for human and animal consumption. The buzzing of the bees and the vibrant colours of butterflies are the staples of the tranquillity and raw beauty of the countryside – a place which beguiles the eyes and calms the soul. But with the hustle and bustle of modern day life, we tend to neglect the microscopic worlds embedded within our own; the symbiotic relationship between their worlds and ours. Here you will be entertained by captivating fights and sensational performances and be rendered speechless by imposing yet delicate natural structures - a few of what you will find in the habitat of earth’s tiniest nomads – the bees. The realm of the butterflies is also begrudgingly gorgeous and these creatures are perhaps the most fancied species in the insect world. Their beautiful colouring and graceful flight appeal to everyone. And most of all, their phenomenal transformation is testament to the evolving nature of life on earth. This two part film magnifies the world of the bees and the butterflies, showing exactly what they have to offer.

Most people associate honey producing insects with the name "BEE". Few realize that there are over 560 different species of bees - most of them live their lives as “busy as a bee," some “abuse" other insects and others are even known to be murderers. The film Children of the Sun - Wild Bees shows the incredible diversity and the stunning adaptations of our "BEES" to various habitats and diverse living conditions. Fascinating fights, sensational performances, imposing structures and colourful creatures – the world of Wild Bees offers all of this and more.

Excellent reminder of the true value of our wild, native bees and why we need to plant native flowers in our gardens. Thank you!

I feel like a child again, enjoying a soothing voice telling me a lovely story. I'm so grateful to be reminded that the world is still miraculous, beautiful and so very magical. I grew up in the UK, but have lived in the States for thirty years. I miss my homeland, but my life is tied up here now. Thank you for letting me imagine I'm there, for a delightful hour, and for it being so close and personal with these wee creatures!

When I was a kid about 6 or 7, I was in the garden one day trying to pop the loopins my Dad grew (ensuring I was out of sight so I could blame my brother) and I saw a bee on the ground. At first I thought it was dead, but I saw it moving it's legs and realized it was just ill or something. So I ran inside, grabbed an empty ice cream box out the shed, and fashioned a makeshift garden in it for the bee.

Once Billy the Bee was rehoused, I sneaked him inside past my Dad, and into my room and watched him intently. I used a big leaf to pick him up and place him directly onto the flowers, hoping he'd revive. My Dad came upstairs and caught me, told me I was silly and probably would get stung, but he returned with a blob on honey on one of his microscope prods and dabbed it all over the flowers. The next morning I woke up to the sound of

Billy was moving around! He was climing onto various flowers, spreading his wings and trying his best to catch an upward drift. I called my Dad inside, showed him the miracle, and my Dad said "Wait and returned with more honey. By the early afternoon, I was hand feeding Billy with honey on my finger, and he periodically spread his wings and buzzed his little heart out.

I left the house, took him out front. Bigger run up there. I legged it down the street, as fast as my bandy legs could carry me, urging and willing him on to take flight! After 2-3 attempts, he spread his little bee wings .... and took to the sky! Up and up he flew! Spiraling and looping like a plane at an airshow! "FLY! YOURE FREE!" I screamed at the top of my lungs!

And he flew, up and away, back to his people. The bee people. And I never saw him again...

In the Kalahari Desert the bees will fly up to 18 km or 12 miles in one direction to find water needed to cool down the hive at extreme temperatures so that any eggs they have wont die from overheating. If you stop your vehicle there, take out a towel and wet it to cool yourself off, the breeze will carry the evaporated water molecules down wind and soon your white towel will be dark with all the bees sucking up all the moisture they can while it still lasts. To me they are the most intelligent and well coordinated living social structure on the planet with incredible memory and constructive skills varying up to 32 in its lifetime, each performed at different stages of its adult life. A bee, of all trades and master of every one.

To help local bees, plant local flowers. Tuleps and other foreign flowers are useless to most solitaire bees.

My primary reason for using this platform is because of channels like this one.
I love watching documentaries about nature, animals, stars, galaxies and the universe.
These videos are both entertaining and educational.

I am not a biologist by education, but I have always found nature shows to be entertaining and therapeutic. They always set the mood in motion and each time I go out and about in the nature, I enjoy it even better thanks to watching a nature show a night before. It also sometimes makes me sad to see how much our wilderness have changed in the name of human development. I wish we had a law that would obligate each house to plant native flowering bushes and trees in the yard to help with the collapsing bugs and birds population. Or a pond whenever possible, to help native amphibians thrive.
