I just have a couple thoughts that popped up about this. Sure, it could have been because they were jealous, but would it really be something they risk because what if cadence found out that they tried to make it so Shining Armor missed their date? Also wouldn’t the fact Princess Celestia had a personal student be well known in the castle, why would they risk the trouble that comes with messing with said student’s older brother?

To be fair, the guards were abusing their authority and mistreating Shining and perhaps other rookie cadets. They should've been setting on good examples on being a proper royal guard to their rookies by guiding them not abusing them. When Celestia noticed this from Twilight, she knows she needs to teach those rude guards a lesson. The princess would've think of any other solutions but she thought it would be best from them to learn the experience of what it's like to be mistreated for themselves after what they did. It's called karma.

the guards was mean because they said "Maybe I should ask Cadence out instend"but then twilight has an idea and she talks to the princess and I laugh when the voice went "PROMOTED" it's funny 😂😂😂😂😂
