As someone who dates girls; What I do when she's sad is;
1. Bring over her favorite food to her house, don't take her out because she probably doesn't want to go out in public with puffy eyes.
2. Ask her if she (A) Wants to talk about it, (B) Wants a distraction, or (C) Wants to be alone.

If she wants to talk, I ask if she just wants me to listen or if she wants advice.
If she wants a distraction, I bring up a mutual interest (ie game, movie, series, etc) and we can ramble until she feels better.
If she wants to be alone, I will leave her with the food and then go do something nice like washing her dishes for her or otherwise tidying up so she doesn't have to, until she's ready to choose option A or option B.

Never fails for me.
