I think you captured the beautiful warmth of black skin and the reference photo captured the cooler tones of black skin. I like the differences and I love how she glows in your art!!

Little story: my husband was watching this video with me. After some "humhum" I paused and asked what was on his mind. "Well, she almost paints for 15 minutes without dipping her brush once, you really need to ask her what brushes she uses, so you can stop using so much paint."
It's late here and we were in bed already, explaining the wonders of editing have to wait till tomorrow. 😂😂

So beautiful, as always. Your art does and always will have it's own spin from the reference photo, which is what makes it art in the first place. Your brain is not telling you it's better than it is, it's showing you the piece you created AS IT IS, it's own thing, separate from the initial idea and separate from the reference piece. Also, no, you're not going crazy. When you painted the clothing, it was the last value needed to show the full depth of the piece. With that in place instead of the white paper, the depth and values came together. :3
