HELL YEAH! an an engineer myself I was always told that Roman concrete was WAY too good, that it was probably better than every concrete that is made today. These news makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Imagine countless of trial and errors the Romans went through to perfect their concrete is mind boggling!

this all makes sense. it's not some secret ingredient we wouldn't have guessed that was closely guarded, just... a different recipe, mix order, that causes an unexpected outcome. it's so simple, and when you understand what's going on, it makes sense. I like this.

Big W for humanity here. We should celebrate with a giant concrete monument of our own!

The fact that this has hunted the recess of my mind for years and finally knowing has just awestruck me with how simple it was, like people were going mad trying to mix all sorts of weird stuff in concrete like grounded up bird feathers and even pig blood to try and repacate or replace Roman concrete... it is amazing that it was just how you changed up the base ingredients order by one.

This discovery is actually crazy. Especially considering that Vitruvius talks about the important properties of lime and limestone in his Ten Books on Architecture. It's like the answer was right there.

I imagine like most great discoveries, this was originally the result of an accident from a botched batch, but some clever Roman engineer was like "Hey, let's keep using this."

It’s just very sad that everyone is very distracted by current events that they’ll miss one of the greatest discoveries in modern times

we have literally re-discovered lost technology like it's some kind of WH40K story

Modern buildings: “Water damage oH No!!!”

Roman concrete buildings: Mmm that’s good water!”

a structure, that instead of getting soggy and losing tinsel strength like wood, becomes even stronger and less permeable is amazing. i super excited

I remember reading about this! They also mentioned that it being mixed while hot was an important step in forming the structure and the chunks. That if the quicklime was allowed to cool prior to mixing that it did not have the same effect

Romans really have cemented their construction prowess.

True demascus steel, roman conrete, and greek fire all in roughly a decade. This must be the age of recovering the lost arts.

Don't forget hot lime also absorbs CO2 for years. We use hot lime and NHL lime to restore old buildings here in Scotland

Thanks for sharing this information. I knew that was a mystery forever. Glad they sorted it out. You’re spot on about concrete, being a high polluter, and it would be really great if we could increase his longevity.

I remember as a child in history class and my teacher said "we don't know how to make it" and I was baffled. This is amazing

To my mind it sounds like not having the ability to process the materials more finely on a massive scale might’ve accidentally made it possible for them to discover a better concrete. It really doesn’t make any sense it took us this long to figure it out…

This is the most exciting thing that I've heard about in years, this will change so much over the course of the next few decades.
