(dodecanoic acid)

A saturated 12-carbon (straight medium-chain) fatty acid. The salts and esters are known as laurates.
It is a conjugate acid of a dodecanoate. It derives from a hydride of a dodecane.
It is a bright white, powdery solid with a faint odor of bay oil or soap.

It is found in various plant and animal fats. It is produced by some plants algae as their metabolite.
